Linda Johnson is a preeminent collector of shorebird decoys and folk art. In addition to acting as President and CEO of Brooklyn Public Library (BPL), Linda is a stalwart patron of the arts. The Johnson Collection will be featured in a stand-alone catalog and will include the Waring Crowell “Dust-Jacket” Plover Trio, along with sixty-four other exceptional lots. The term “dust jacket” was coined by collectors because carvings from these early rigs were chosen for the “dust-jacket” covers of William J. Mackey Jr.’s American Bird Decoys and John and Shirley Delph’s New England Decoys. This is the exact trio that graces the cover of New England Decoys. The spectacular threesome includes plover in turned-head, feeding, and skyward-gazing postures. Muller Jr. Collection of American Bird Decoys, Session II, in The Winter Sale 2021 Dr. Muller's first opportunity to acquire major carvings from the Mackey Collection arose in 1973 and 1974, after the sudden passing of the legendary collector. Cape Cod auctioneer Richard Bourne auctioned off the Mackey Collection in five separate sales, comprising eight sessions. Dr. Muller attended all five auctions, once quipping, “The Russians could have been on the beach and it wouldn’t have kept me away.” There he acquired many of the birds in his collection. Never content, throughout his life, Dr. Muller continued to buy Mackey decoys as they became available on the secondary market. Session II of the Muller Collection will offer the rare opportunity to own prized selections that originated from Mackey, Hillman, Purnell, and other important early collectors. The one-day auction soared above its high estimate ($2,594,965 in total sales) with an exceptionally strong 93% lots sold. Highlights from the decoys included an extraordinary running curlew by A. Elmer Crowell (1862-1952) of East Harwich, Massachusetts, estimated at $60,000/80,000, which sold for $186,500, a new world record for a Crowell decorative shorebird (see image at right). Another record for a single Crowell decorative upland bird was set with a life-sized woodcock selling for $66,125. The painting results in the afternoon’s second session were especially strong. The near-400 lot sale stirred collectors’ interest with superb examples of American paintings, folk art, decoys, and fishing collectibles. The two-day sale proved a resounding success with a total exceeding $2.4 million. The top lot was an outstanding river scene by New England impressionist Frank W. Benson (1862-1951). The first Long decoy up on the block, a preening pintail, sold for $546,250 to a bidder in the room. The plump oversized merganser sold just over the high estimate for $207,000 to a Massachusetts collector. Bringing in more than any individual item in the auction, the nesting Canada goose sold for $661,250. The top painting in the sale was an oil painting by Aiden Lassell Ripley (1896-1969), Springers and Pheasants. The work set a new world record for the artist with its $85,000 hammer price. Copley saw solid results with the works of Boston Impressionist Frank W. Benson (1862-1951); a pair of his watercolors sold for $109,250. Bronzes also performed well, with Bob Scriver’s (1914-1999) buffalo within its estimates of $4/8,000 at $6,300 and William Koelpin’s (1938-1996) Winnebago Sleigh Ride exceeding its $5/8,000 estimate, bringing over $8,600. Day two of the sale was Copley’s strongest decoy auction to date with an unprecedented 18 of the top 19 lots selling. Of these, 5 lots went for more than their estimates, 10 lots within, and just 3 sold for under their estimates. Crowell prices were strong, a Lesser Yellowlegs sold for $37,375 ($15/25,000). The cover lot, a Crowell Running Curlew ($60/90,000), rocketed to nearly three times the high estimate with four phone bidders vying to $190,000 before finally hammering for $215,000 and setting a new world record for a decorative shorebird carving (see image to right). Later in the sale, the Outstanding Crowell Wood Duck Drake came within its estimated price range at $115,000 ($100/200,000). The rare Hanging Bobwhite Quail with a terrific provenance then neared its high estimate before settling in at just under $49,000, a new record for any Crowell quail carving ($30/50,000).
