Our pre-registration form, including our Terms & Conditions, is located in our catalog and is available online.

Buying at Auction

Live Bidding
Copley Fine Art Auctions strongly encourages all bidders to attend the sale in person if possible. To bid in person, you must register on the day of the auction where you will receive a numbered paddle. At the registration desk you will be required to present a government issued proof of identification such as a driver's license or passport. The auctioneer will announce each lot in numerical order as listed in the catalog and then open the bidding. Before you raise your paddle, you should familiarize yourself with the bidding increments. To place a bid, simply raise your paddle for the auctioneer to accept your bid. Once the final bid has been accepted, the auctioneer will declare the item sold, and then announce the hammer price and the paddle number.

Telephone Bidding
Clients unable to attend the sale may still participate in the live auction by bidding on the telephone with a trained staff member. International bidders and clients bidding from a cell phone are encouraged to leave a safety bid which will function as an absentee bid if we are unable to reach you. Completed and signed bid forms must be received by Copley Fine Art Auctions no later than 10 AM (EST) on the Monday prior to the auction. You will receive confirmation of your telephone bid(s) within 24 hours of receipt. Telephone bids cannot be arranged on the day of the sale. The Absentee/Telephone Bid Form is found in the back of our auction catalog and is available online.

Absentee Bidding
For clients unable to participate live or on the telephone, Copley Fine Art Auctions offers the option of leaving Absentee Bids, also known as left bids. Absentee Bids work exactly as if the client was in the salesroom bidding up to a pre-determined price limit. This bid is confidential. Our auctioneer will bid on your behalf against other bidders both in the sales room and on the telephone. Completed and signed bid forms must be received by Copley Fine Art Auctions no later than 10 AM (EST) on the Monday prior to the auction. You will receive confirmation of your absentee bid(s) within 24 hours of receipt. The Absentee/Telephone Bid Form is found in the back of our auction catalog and is available online.

Internet Bidding
The entire catalog will be posted on our website approximately four weeks prior to the sale. Buyers may leave absentee bids on our web site through our online catalog. These bids are executed at the auction as if you were leaving an absentee bid (see above). Internet bids may be submitted until 8 AM (EST) on the morning of the sale. First time Internet bidders must register through our online catalog prior to bidding. This process usually takes less than 10 minutes and requires you to leave a credit card number to hold your bid.

Live Online Bidding through Artfact
Copley Fine Art Auctions is pleased to offer live bidding through ArtFact Live. Clients may leave absentee bids up to 2 hours prior to the beginning of the sale. Please click on the following link to register: www.artfact.com. You may also watch an online live bidder demonstration

Buyer's Premium A buyer's premium of 15% of the final bid price up to and including $1,000,000, plus 10% of the final bid price over $1,000,000, will be applied to each lot sold, to be paid by the Buyer as part of the purchase price.

After the Auction

Payment
Copley Fine Art Auctions accepts cash, wire-transfers, and good checks. Successful bidders must pay for their purchases during or immediately after the sale or upon receipt of an invoice. Please be advised that a monthly service charge of 1.5% will be added to unpaid balances beginning 30 days after the sale date. A $50 fee will be added for returned checks.

Sales Tax
All Bidders holding a valid Massachusetts or out of state resale number must provide their certificate or a copy thereof while registering. Failure to do so will subject the bidder to a mandatory 6.25% Massachusetts sales tax on purchases.

Pick-Ups
Auction purchases will be available for pick up until 5 PM on the day of the sale. After that time, items will be available for pick up by appointment five business days after the auction at our warehouse located in Allston, Massachusetts. We kindly ask that all items be removed from our warehouse within 30 days after the auction ends to avoid a $5 daily storage fee.
